Inside is a floor that's flexible enough to satisfy a wide variety of families and life-styles. The dominant feature of this passive solar system is the 32-foot long greenhouse where the sun's heat is collected, stored and shared with the rest of the house, cutting energy bills in half. This offers open spaces and partial ceilings to maximize airflow throughout.
1. Are you able to explain the passive solar systems and how the greenhouse works into the house?
The glass-roofed greenhouse allows sunlight into the greenhouse where the heated air remains trapped until the windows are opened from the greenhouse to the house, permitting the heat to flow into the home. If tanks of water are placed in the greenhouse, they can capture daytime heat and then release it into the house at night when the house windows are opened. Other techniques can also be used, such as installing a fan and duct system to draw air from the heated greenhouse and distribute it to other parts of the house.
The greenhouse essentially becomes the “heat generator” for multiple heating uses. However, the house orientation on the lot is very important. Ideally, the greenhouse should face south. If it faces north, it would essentially become just another room with a glass roof. Likewise, heavy tree coverage blocking sunlight to the south-facing greenhouse would reduce the effectiveness of the passive solar system.
This type of design works best in climate zones that require substantial heating and little to no air conditioning. Building this style of house in a southern climate would generally not be recommended because the greenhouse heat could overpower indoor comfort levels.
2. What is the chimney like, as it appears that there is no official fireplace?
It does appear that the chimney shown on the renderings does not service a traditional fireplace. It is most likely intended for gas- or oil-burning appliances and a furnace located in the basement. However, the chimney is large enough that it could also potentially serve a basement fireplace. The floor plan itself does not show a fireplace on either the first or second living levels.
3. Is this like a split-level?
Yes, this is considered a split-level design. The entry is located at the main living level (Level One). One level down is the basement and a potential garage area on the sloping side of the lot, while one level up contains two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
